Sega Pulls Sonic Generations From Steam and Xbox, But Not For Good

Sega removes 2011 games from list Sound Generations from Steam and the Xbox Games Store to make way for the game’s upcoming expanded remaster, Sonic X Shadow Generations. But the publisher is taking a rarely seen approach in its plan to scrap the original. Sound Generations of the sale — this will result in both the cancellation of the title of the sale And make it available to people who actually want to buy it.

While the original Sound Generations will be pulled from sale as a standalone title on September 9, Sega said Friday that “we’ve heard your feedback and want to help preserve the game.”

“SO, Sound Generations “The game will still be available via bundles of other iconic Sonic titles on Steam and Xbox,” the publisher said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Current owners of the title will also be able to continue to download and play it. Finally, we are happy to confirm that mods from the Steam version will NOT be affected!”

The original version of Sound Generations was removed from the Xbox Store in late July. On Steam, the game is listed under the Sonic Generations Collectionwhich includes the original game and its Casino Night DLC. It is not yet known in which bundle(s) the original Sonic Generations will be sold in going forward, but the game is also available as part of the Sonic the Hedgehog: Ultimate Pack on Steam.

The practice of removing original versions of games from the list in favor of remasters or re-releases of similar titles is common, particularly at Sega. In 2022, the publisher removed Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and KnucklesAnd Sonic CD digital stores before the launch of Sound originswhich included these four games.

Other publishers have taken similar steps. Rockstar Games has removed Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice CityAnd Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas digital stores, just before the launch of the definitive collection of this trilogy. Ubisoft has removed Beyond Good and Evil HD before the release of Beyond Good and Evil – 20th Anniversary Edition. And IO Interactive was delisted in 2016. Hitman and its 2018 sequel, but as part of a larger effort to integrate these games into Hitman: World of Assassination.

Sega’s Plan to Delete the Original Sound Generations as a standalone title, but retaining its availability, seems like the best solution for this kind of situation – something other publishers will hopefully adopt as remasters, collections and anniversary editions become more common.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on October 25. The game features a complete remaster of the original Sound Generations and an all-new Shadow the Hedgehog story campaign in which the “gun-toting pig” battles his old foe, Black Doom.
